Water Quality

Water Quality Services in Phoenix, AZ

If your water leaves white residue on your faucets, your dishes come out of the dishwasher spotted, your skin feels dry after showering, or your water just doesn’t taste right, the problem is almost certainly your water itself. Phoenix tap water is among the hardest and most mineral-heavy in the United States, and the effects show up in your home every single day.

At Plumbing Masters, we help Phoenix homeowners understand what’s actually in their water and install the right treatment system to address it. Whether you need a water softener, a whole-home filtration system, a reverse osmosis unit for drinking water, or a combination of all three, we size and install solutions specific to your home and your water.

What’s Actually in Phoenix Tap Water

Phoenix’s municipal water supply is technically safe by EPA standards, but “meeting legal limits” and “water you’d choose to drink or cook with” are two different things. Here’s what Phoenix-area homeowners are actually dealing with:

Extreme hardness. Phoenix water measures between 9.2 and 20.1 grains per gallon (GPG) depending on your area and the season. For reference, water is classified as “very hard” at anything above 10.5 GPG. Hard water isn’t a health hazard, but it causes real damage over time: scale buildup inside your water heater and appliances, shortened equipment lifespan, spotted glassware, stiff laundry, and dry skin and hair.

High total dissolved solids (TDS). In 2024, Phoenix tap water measured 560 to 686 parts per million (ppm) in TDS. The EPA’s recommended threshold is 500 ppm. Elevated TDS is why Phoenix tap water can taste flat, bitter, or faintly metallic compared to filtered water.

Disinfection byproducts. Phoenix treats its water with chlorine and chloramine to kill bacteria, which is standard practice. The tradeoff is a measurable chlorine taste and odor, and the presence of trihalomethanes (THMs) and chlorite, which are disinfection byproducts formed in the treatment process.

Arsenic. Arizona’s desert geology means trace arsenic occurs naturally in the water supply. Phoenix municipal water tests within EPA limits, but independent health organizations have flagged arsenic levels as exceeding more conservative recommended thresholds.

Source water variability. About 97-99% of Phoenix’s water comes from surface sources including the Salt, Verde, and Colorado Rivers. Because the mineral content of river water shifts seasonally with snowmelt and rainfall, the hardness and TDS of your tap water can vary noticeably throughout the year.

Signs Your Home Has a Water Quality Problem

You don’t need to test your water to know something’s off. These are the most common complaints we hear from Phoenix homeowners:

  • White or yellowish scale buildup on faucets, showerheads, and around drains
  • Spotty dishes and cloudy glassware straight out of the dishwasher
  • Dry, itchy skin or brittle hair after showering
  • Soap and shampoo that won’t lather properly
  • A chlorine taste or smell from the tap
  • Flat or metallic-tasting drinking water
  • Appliances like water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines failing earlier than expected
  • Reduced water flow from clogged aerators and showerheads

Any one of these is a sign that a treatment system would make a noticeable difference in your home.

Our Water Quality Services

Water Treatment System Installation

A whole-home water treatment system filters and conditions your water at the point it enters your home, so every tap, shower, appliance, and fixture benefits. Depending on your water test results and priorities, this might include a softener, a sediment pre-filter, a carbon filter, a reverse osmosis system, or a combination system that addresses hardness, chlorine, and dissolved solids together.

We start with a water quality assessment so we know exactly what we’re treating before recommending any equipment. Then we size the system to your home’s square footage, number of occupants, and daily water use.

Water Softener Installation

A water softener is the most impactful upgrade most Phoenix homeowners can make. Given that local water regularly measures above 10 GPG and sometimes well above 15 GPG, the scale damage to pipes, water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines adds up fast. A properly sized softener removes calcium and magnesium through an ion exchange process, delivering noticeably softer water to every outlet in the home.

The benefits homeowners report most often after installation include softer skin and hair, soap and shampoo that lathers the way it should, spotless dishes, laundry that stays brighter longer, and a water heater that runs more efficiently and lasts years longer.

We install traditional salt-based ion exchange softeners as well as salt-free conditioning systems for households that prefer to avoid added sodium. We’ll walk you through the tradeoffs of each and recommend the right fit for your water and your household.

Water Softener Repair

A water softener that isn’t regenerating properly, is using too much salt, has stopped softening your water, or is leaking brine isn’t just inconvenient. It means your pipes and appliances are back to taking on hard water while you assume they’re protected.

Common issues we diagnose and repair include a stuck or failed brine valve, a control valve that won’t cycle correctly, a resin bed that’s been fouled by iron or sediment, salt bridges or salt mush in the brine tank, and motor or timer failures in older units. In many cases a repair is all that’s needed. Where a unit is beyond cost-effective repair, we’ll give you an honest assessment and a replacement recommendation.

Choosing the Right Water Treatment Solution

Not every home needs the same setup. Here’s a quick guide to how we think about matching the solution to the problem:

If your main concern is scale and hard water damage, a water softener installed at the main water line is the most effective solution. It addresses the root cause throughout the entire home.

If your main concern is drinking water taste and contaminants, a reverse osmosis (RO) system installed at the kitchen sink is the most targeted option. RO removes dissolved solids, chlorine byproducts, arsenic, and nitrates, delivering clean-tasting drinking and cooking water without treating every drop of water in the house.

If you want to address both, a whole-home softener paired with a point-of-use RO system is the most comprehensive setup and the one we most commonly install in Phoenix homes. The softener handles scale and protects appliances; the RO handles drinking water quality.

If you’re on a private well, water quality can vary significantly from municipal supply and is not subject to the same regulatory testing. We recommend a full water test before specifying any treatment equipment, as well water in the Phoenix Basin commonly carries elevated iron, arsenic, nitrates, and hardness well above municipal levels.
